Mythos

I tried so hard not to cross the mountain border into the human’s territory. For almost two weeks, I fought with everything inside of me, but the power Lenora controlled me with wouldn’t let me stop, and it wouldn’t let me turn around. I was her puppet and she held the strings. I could think about defying her, but my body wouldn’t listen. I didn’t make it easy for her. I flew fast, jerking from one side to the other as we crossed the snow-capped peaks so that she had to hold my spikes in a death grip to keep herself from plummeting to the earth.

“Stop it,” she commanded.

She didn’t specify what I had to stop doing, so I dove upward and back down and then spiraled through the air.

“Fly straight!” Lenora shrieked, gripping me with her thigh muscles as she clung to my long neck. “Fucking spirits! You’re going to kill me, and you know that means you’ll die, too.”

I flattened my neck and flew straight and smooth. I wanted to tell her I’d gladly kill us both, but she wasn’t one of my mates. She couldn’t hear me through the bond.

The mountains below sloped downward. Beyond that, a dusty canyon snaked across part of the land, a dark crack in the realm of humans. The sun filtered through the clouds like a golden veil. I almost felt free, flying across the world in my dragon form. Cursed, I hadn’t realized what I was missing. Except I wasn’t free. I used to love flying. Now, I wished I’d remained trapped in my other body until the end of my days. I hated Lenora for taking that away from me. Hated wasn’t a strong enough word. I fucking hated the heartless bitch.

“We’ll stop here for a break. Take us to the ground. Carefully,” she clarified.

Damn. I would’ve loved to make her taste dirt.

I dove down into the crack of the canyon where water flowed, landing on the rocks by the river. As soon as she climbed off me, I shifted forms. Other than the fact Lenora had control over me when I was a dragon, I preferred that body. Whenever I shifted into my fae form, it felt like I was cramming myself into a tight box.

“You really shouldn’t harm the humans,” I said to the mage who wore white trousers and a matching sleeveless shirt. She’d packed away the cloak she’d used to hide herself in. “They might come for Faerah if you start killing off their people.”

“If they try, the fae will help me wipe them from existence.”

I turned a cool smile at her. “Surely some of the humans are innocent.”

Lenora bent down and unlaced her boots. “They tried to burn me alive. They are the ones who will burn to ash. I will show their kind no mercy.”

She really believed they’d be so easily annihilated. Her thirst for revenge would start a war. I didn’t want to deal with the inconvenience of a war, all the destruction and senseless death, the wealth it seeped from coffers.
